Door Handles - Frequently Asked Questions

Right tab

Choosing new door handles for your doors may sound like an easy task but when you come to realise the extent of door handle options you may start to think differently, for there are dozens upon dozens of choices. Here is a look at some of the most frequently asked questions and answers regarding door handles:

What are the different styles of door handles?

Depending on the website or the shop you are browsing through you may find the categories differ slightly but generally speaking with door handles you have a choice from Designer Door Levers on Round Rose, Designer Door Levers on Square Rose, Designer Door Handles on Backplate, Classic Door Handles, Stainless Steel Door Handles, Door Handles for Doors with Espagnolette Multipoint Locking Systems, Porcelain Door Levers on Rose, Porcelain Door Handles on Backplate, Black Antique Door Handles, and Aluminium Door Handles. Within each of these categories you will find an array of individual door handles to choose from.

What are door handles made from?

Most door handles are produced by a process of hot forging, pressure die casting or sand casting. All these processes require a material that has a low melting point and good flow characteristics. Until recently the metal of choice was Brass which is an alloy of copper and zinc however the price of copper has risen to such an extent that the more popular casting alloy has become ZAMAK which is made up of zinc, aluminium, magnesium and copper. The ZAMAK material is also a very good base metal for chrome plating and electro plating with brass. Other materials include acrylic, aluminium, wrought iron, brass, chrome, stainless steel, porcelain (wooden), and glass. Each different material creates a different look and style.

How do you clean door handles?

The cleaning of door handles all depends on the type of door handle you have, for each different material requires a different cleaning method. For example with chrome door handles should never use metal polishes or aerosol spray polishes as this damages the chrome, you can simply dust the door handle with a duster or with warm soapy water. Always check the correct method of cleaning for your type of door handle.

What are privacy set door handles?

The privacy set door handle has a thumb turn sometimes referred to as a turn and release or a snib and release below the handle, when this is turned it operates a mechanism behind the backplate which stops the handle/lever being pushed down. Ideal for use on bedrooms or bathrooms. The privacy set is only available in a few handle designs such as the victorian scroll suite, victorian straight suite or the georgian suite. The privacy set only requires a tubular latch in the door.

What is a bathroom set of door handles?

The bathroom door handle has a thumb turn sometimes referred to as a turn and release or a snib and release below the handle, this is attached to a 5mm spindle which passes through the door and a bathroom lock inside the door allowing the door to be locked and unlocked. As the name suggests this door handle is commonly used on bathrooms and toilets.
