With the launch of the From The Anvil Blacksmith and Period ranges on our website both containing 18 different finishes between them, we have been asked for advice on what finish is best or their differences.

Having been asked this question a lot since the launch we have decided to write this short guide to each finish and their suitability to different environments to help you along your way.

Blacksmith Finishes

The Blacksmith collection From The Anvil has a majority of products forged by hand from solid steel. The hammer marks left by the craftsmen add character and charm making each piece unique. These traditional product types lend themselves to buildings of a historic nature. Finishes available in the blacksmith collection are;

Beeswax Finish (For Internal Use Only)

The Beeswax finish is the most authentic finish for steel. When they have finished forging the colours left in the steel range from blue to deep red ochre. The Beeswax gives the steel a subtle matt richness and offers excellent protection when fitted internally and properly maintained. To preserve these colours From The Anvil recommend periodically maintaining it with their beeswax maintenance wax (available to purchase with your products if required).

External Beeswax Finish (For Internal or External Use)

The External Beeswax Finish is manufactured from anti-corrosive beeswax and is unique to the From The Anvil range. Similar to the standard Beeswax finish with the depth of colours ranging from blues to deep reds. This finish has been salt tested to 480 hours meeting the grade 5 British Standard. Maintain by wiping with lightly oiled cloth from time to time to remove harmful deposits and maintain its original condition. From The Anvil also recommend periodically maintaining this finish with their beeswax maintenance wax.

Black Finish (For Internal and External Use)

From The Anvil’s Black finish is baked in a high temperature oven giving it a durable corrosion resistant finish. This finish is resistant to moisture and can be used in bathrooms and damp conditions. This finish has been salt tested to 480 hours meeting the grade 5 British Standard. Maintain by wiping with lightly oiled cloth from time to time to remove harmful deposits and maintain its original condition.

Black Antique Finish (For Internal and External Use)

From The Anvil’s Antique Black finish is more textured than the Black finish due to the cast manufacturing methods used during production. Like the Black finish it is baked in a high temperature oven giving it a durable corrosion resistant finish. This finish is resistant to moisture and can be used in bathrooms and damp conditions. This finish has been salt tested to 480 hours meeting the grade 5 British Standard. Maintain by wiping with lightly oiled cloth from time to time to remove harmful deposits and maintain its original condition.

Pewter Patina Finish (For Internal and External Use)

From The Anvil’s Pewter Patina finish is a beautiful and elegant finish that highlights the texture of the steel of the product. The unique and complex process runs deep into the metal resulting in an unmatched contrast of texture and colour. This finish is resistant to moisture and can be used in bathrooms and damp conditions. This finish has been salt tested to 480 hours meeting the grade 5 British Standard. Maintain by wiping with lightly oiled cloth from time to time to remove harmful deposits and maintain its original condition.

Antique Pewter Finish (For Internal and External Use)

From The Anvil’s antique pewter finish is a complicated process applied to a solid brass base metal, giving excellent anti-corrosive properties. Wiping with a lightly oiled cloth from time to time will remove harmful deposits and maintain its original condition

Bronze Finish (Steel Base Material) (For Internal and External Use)

From The Anvil’s antique pewter finish is mild steel coated with a permanent bronze finish which is weatherproof and will maintain it’s rich glossy finish for years to come. This finish is elegant and beautifully highlights the rustic and distinctive qualities of the handforging process. It has excellent anti-corrosive properties but From The Anvil recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time to time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain its original condition.

Natural Smooth Finish (For Internal Use Only)

From The Anvil’s Natural Smooth Finish is natural cast iron, finished with a clear matt lacquer which is only intended for internal use. This also produces a beautifully smooth look and feel with subtle highlights from the base metal. We recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time to time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain its original condition

Natural Textured Finish (For Internal Use Only)

From The Anvil’s Natural Textured finish is a textured cast iron, finished with a clear matt lacquer which is only intended for internal use. If fitted in an enclosed porch/bathroom it will need to be treated with maintenance wax periodically to help protect the iron from any moisture. It is recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time to time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain its original condition.

Iron Finish (For Internal and External Use)

From The Anvil’s Iron finish is made from solid iron, exhibiting the natural beauty and texture of the metal. It is cast and finished with a clear powder coating to protect the iron from weather and moisture, this also gives it a rich colour. Wiping with a lightly oiled cloth from time to time will remove harmful deposits and maintain its original condition.

Period Finishes

The Ironmongery in the Period Collection has been designed to reflect Britain’s great architectural heritage. The products in this range have been refined to the highest specification and have a timeless elegance.

Polished Brass Finish (For Internal or External Use)

From The Anvil’s polished brass products are made from solid unlacquered brass. Regular polishing with a good quality metal polish is recommended to maintain the original highly polished finish. However, if the intention is to allow the surface to age through oxidization, no attention needs to be given. Over time the brass will acquire a darker and more aged patina. This finish has been salt tested to 480hours, which meets grade 5 British Standard.

Aged Brass Finish (For Internal or External Use)

From The Anvil’s aged brass products are made from solid unlacquered brass which undergoes an accelerated ageing process and is then re-polished, leaving any decorative details dark and larger surface areas more polished. If the intention is to allow the surface to age, no attention needs to be given. Over time the brass will acquire a darker and more aged patina. However polishing with brasso will give the product a natural sheen where required. This finish has been salt tested to 480hours, which meets grade 5 British Standard

Polished Bronze Finish (For Internal or External Use)

This finish is manufactured from solid unlacquered bronze containing a minimum of 85% copper. This finish undergoes an accelerated ageing process and is then re-polished, leaving any decorative details dark and larger surface areas more polished. If the intention is to allow the surface to age, no attention needs to be given. Over time the bronze will acquire a darker and more aged patina. However, polishing with brasso will give the product a natural sheen where required. This finish has been salt tested to 480hours, which meets grade 5 British Standard.

Aged Bronze Finish (For Internal or External Use)

This Aged Bronze finish is manufactured from solid unlacquered bronze containing a minimum of 85% copper. The aged bronze is matt and rich due to the finishing process we use to age the metal, this process initially darkens the material, however this finish will gradually oxidize over time revealing the warm copper undertones. Lightening the finish can be accelerated by hand-polishing with a heavy dry cloth. This finish has been salt tested to 480hours, which meets grade 5 British Standard.

Polished Chrome Finish (For Internal or External Use)

This Polished Chrome finish is a highly polished finish which reflects like a mirror. A base metal of solid brass or steel with quality chrome plating applied to its surface. We recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time to time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain its original condition. This finish has been salt tested to 480hours, which meets grade 5 British Standard.

Satin Chrome Finish (For Internal or External Use)

Satin chrome offers a subtle alternative to polished chrome and is a popular choice where a matt appearance is required. A base metal of solid brass or steel with quality chrome plating applied to its surface. We recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time to time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain its original condition. This finish has been salt tested to 480hours, which meets grade 5 British Standard

Polished Nickel Finish (For Internal or External Use)

This Polished Nickel finish is a highly polished finish with a nickel plating applied to solid brass. Our polished nickel is unlacquered and is similar to a polished chrome finish but with much warmer tones. This finish has been salt tested to 480hours, which meets grade 5 British Standard. Wiping with a lightly oiled cloth from time to time will remove harmful deposits and maintain its original condition.

Wooden Finishes

Ebony Finish (For Internal or External Use)

Ebony finish is wood that is ebonised to have a rich, dark hue, a very high density and fine texture which gives a very smooth finish. Polish or wax product to maintain the wood and to give overall protection. From The Anvil recommend this finish can be used externally if maintained with the Anvil maintenance wax & wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time to time as this will also aid the removal of harmful deposits.

Rosewood Finish (For Internal or External Use)

Rosewood has a richly hued reddish colour with much darker veining. Polish or wax to maintain the wood and to give overall protection. This finish can be used externally if maintained with anvil maintenance wax & wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time to time. This will also aid the removal of harmful deposits.

Finishes Summary and General Care

Lightly oiling your product as soon as you get it or fit your product (not beeswax) will help prevent any build up of harmful deposits which can drastically shorten the lifespan of your furniture. We recommend that ironmongery is also wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time (not beeswax). This will help remove harmful deposits and restore it to its original condition.

All moving parts should be oiled prior to fitting and periodically afterwards. A 3-in-1 oil would be perfect for all oiling purposes.

The chemicals in wet plaster and wet paint will rust From The Anvil’s products. Only fit your new ironmongery when you have made sure that all new plaster is fully cured and paint has dried. It is also recommended not to use From The Anvil products in coastal areas as the salt content in the air will rust all finishes. Only 316 marine grade stainless steel will not rust in this sort of environment and therefore From The Anvil products cannot be guaranteed.

All of the product finishes marked above for ‘external use’ have been designed to withstand many adverse weather conditions, but even with these tough finishes it is still a necessity to maintain the finish. Regular wiping with a slightly oiled cloth is highly recommended as harmful deposits can & will stick to the surface which will eventually break it down. A little time & effort during the life of your item will prolong and maintain your genuine ‘From The Anvil’ furniture long into the future

There are so many variations of wooden garden gates and numerous situations and locations, you may be fitting a simple inward opening single garden gate between two wooden posts or if you are not so lucky a pair of 6ft gates between brick pillars over rising ground.

The good news is that there is pretty much a hinge variation for every type of wooden garden gate in almost any situation so whether you are a budding DIY enthusiast or a competent carpenter you should be able to make a more informed choice by reading my Ultimate Guide to Wooden Gate Hinges.

Tee Hinges

Tee hinges are generally sold in pairs, they are a general-purpose hinge with a frame fixing flap, a straight knuckle and a tapering horizontal strap with screw fixings along its length. Tee hinges are normally made from steel and coated with a protective finish such as zinc plate, epoxy black or galvanised. They are available in 3 gauges and various lengths to suit the size and weight of your gate.

If you live in a coastal environment or other high moisture environment and require extra corrosion resistance, then we can also offer a range of marine grade 316 Stainless Steel Tee Hinges.

Length

Hinge length is determined by the width of your gate. The hinge should be one third the width of the gate – so for a 48” wide gate you need a hinge that is 16” long.

Suitability

Light Tee Hinges – Small gates and doors up to 10kg and max width of 900mm

Medium Tee Hinges – Medium gates up to 20kg and max width of 1200mm

Heavy Tee Hinges – Large Gates up to 50kg and max width of 1800mm

Hook and Band Hinges

Hook and Band hinges are also sometimes referred to as ‘Hook and Ride’ hinges or ‘Coach Hinges’ They are sold in pairs and are a general-purpose hinge used on medium to heavy garden gates or doors. They comprise of a band or heavy strap, holed for both screws and a coach bolt fixing and a hook on plate which fixes to the frame.

They can be fitted with both hooks facing upwards allowing for the gate to be lifted off or with the top hook facing down to stop the gate being lifted, the bottom hook takes the weight of the gate while the top hook keeps the gate in position.

Cranked or Straight

Hook and band hinges are available in various sizes as either straight hook and band hinges or cranked hook and band hinges. When fitting the hook to the front face of the post the cranked pattern allows for the gate to sit flush with the front of the post. When fitting a straight hook and band hinge in the same way the gate will sit slightly proud of the front of the post unless the plate is recessed.

Length

With hook and band hinges we recommend that the hinge should be about one third the width of the gate or door, however if the gate or door is over six feet in height a third hinge should be used to prevent warping.

Hook and band hinges are supplied with fixings and the standard hook on a rectangular plate, this is suitable for most application however other hooks are also available to use with alternative setups such as the ‘Gate Hanger Hook to Bolt’ the ‘Gate Hook to Drive’ and the ‘Gate Hook to Build’

More specialist hook and band hinges are also available such as the curved rail hook and band hinge sets for gates and doors with an arched or curved top rail or adjustable bands and hooks on plates allowing the installer to both align gates during fitting and adjust after fitting to compensate for gate drop over time.

Heavy Reversible Hinges

Heavy reversible hinges are more of a traditional design dating back to 1850, they are more decorative than hook and band hinges. Supplied in pairs, they comprise of forged heavy-duty steel straps and cast-iron cups. These hinges have exceptional strength and are ideal for heavy gates, barn doors, stables and garage doors.

We supply heavy reversible hinges in various finishes to suit your requirements including hot spelter galvanised, epoxy black and premium black, which is black powder coating on top of hot dip galvanising making them more corrosion resistant than standard epoxy black finish.

I always recommend packing the cups with grease when installing, this will create a smoother action and lengthen the life of the cups and hinge pins.

Security Tip

As with all hinges fitted externally on garage doors, barn doors and other outbuildings, security can be increased by fitting the cups with non-removable screws. Alternatively, you could fit Hinge Bolts which help prevent doors being forced off their hinges.

Gate Hinges Summary

Tee Hinges are normally fitted to small gates and shed doors, whilst hook and band hinges and heavy reversible hinges are more commonly found fitted to medium to large gates and doors. The hook and band hinge of choice should be the cranked hook and band because you will end up with the gate sitting flush with the post. Heavy reversible hinges are more traditional and decorative and often seen fitted to wooden garage doors, stables and barns.

A collaborative study from the University of Singapore and the London School of Economics has found that for “extremely intelligent” people, time spent alone helps to increase their “life satisfaction”. In other words, very, very smart people like locks on their doors.

The reason for this, so the two scientists claim, is that smarter people have evolved to need social interactions less than the average person. Still, what about those of us who aren’t complete geniuses? Can sash locks and the privacy they give us make the average Joe happy, too?

The Link Between Privacy & Happiness

First off, it’s worth mentioning that not everyone agrees with the two scientists’ ideas about evolutionary psychology. Satoshi Kanazawa’s work, in particular, has been criticised a lot in the past.

However, while Kanazawa is one of the few people to claim that only smart people properly enjoy time to themselves, he isn’t the only person to have seen a connection between privacy and happiness in general. The relationship between the two has a longer history than you might expect…

-In the year 1700, British poet Alexander Pope wrote an “Ode on Solitude”, which opens with “Happy the man whose wish and care | a few paternal acres bound | Content to breathe his native air | In his own ground.” In other words, a happy man is content just having his own space to breathe.
-Pope was followed by the Romantic poets of the 18th Century who also wrote pages and pages about how much fun being on your own is.
-During the 1930s, lawmakers in California felt that the link between privacy and happiness was so important that The Right to Privacy and The Pursuit of Happiness became an official right in California in 1931.
-In 2015, Dr Bella DePaulo wrote about how being alone can make you happier and so did Dr Marty Nemko in 2017.

All of those people (poets, lawyers and scientists) have written at length about how having some time to yourself can make you happier. It’s not just for the “extremely intelligent”; it’s for everyone.

But What Does All of This Have to Do With Sash Locks?

Locks are one of the best ways of ensuring privacy around the home. Yes, we all love our families. Still, whether you’re married with kids or whether you’ve just moved into a new home with your other half, we all need a bit of privacy from time to time. What’s more, hundreds of years of philosophy, law and science tells us that this is a perfectly normal and acceptable thing to want.

All of this might explain the rise of man caves. They are more than just a place for middle-aged men to play video games. There are, in fact, some compelling psychological arguments for why a man might need a cave to hide out in every once in awhile. And, of course, no man cave is complete without a decent lock.

-A moody teenager might be a lot less moody if they had a bedroom lock, too.

-A bolt can also be great for a home library or a home study as well.

If you’re thinking of Ikea furniture, think again. Scandinavian style interior design is about way more than that. For starters, a lot of Scandinavian interior design’s most recognisable features come from necessity. With such cold, long, dark winters, there’s a huge emphasis on light and warmth in Scandinavian interior design. However, this isn’t achieved with gaudy or extravagant heating systems or windows. Rather, the idea is to conquer the unforgivably cold weather of the Nordic countries with a modest and understated design.

The Language of Design

Some like to link this modesty and understatement back to Scandinavian culture. The word “lagom” in Swedish has no direct translation in English, but it’s well understood by the Danes and the Norwegians as a word which reflects okayness and mediocrity in a positive way. In English, if something is “just alright”, it’s often seen as negative. In Swedish, if something is “lagom” then that’s a positive thing.

Then there’s “hygge”. A Danish word understood by most Scandinavians, it refers to the joy of cosiness of contentedness around others. Once again, with no direct translation into English, it can be a difficult concept to understand, though many American and British interior designs have been trying to.

Finally, there’s the word “Janteloven” (or Jantelogin or Jantelagen in Icelandic and Swedish, respectively) which translates as Jante’s Law. So what is Jante’s law? Well, once again, it’s hard to explain in English. However, it basically refers to the idea that the individual is not all that special, or smart, or great — but that’s okay. Don’t worry about trying to stand out. It’s nice just being nice.

Combine these ideas together and you wind up with interior design which is simple, cosy, functional and subtle.

Satin Chrome Door Handles & Scandinavian Design

To say that “satin chrome door handles are incredible” isn’t very Scandinavian. After all, according to “lagom”, it’s okay for something just to be okay. It doesn’t need to be amazing, outstanding, or fantastic.

However, to say that “satin chrome door handles are minimalist” isn’t quite Scandinavian either. After all, according to “hygge”, Scandinavian design is about being comfortable. Scandi style is quiet, rather than cold. It’s calming, rather than clinical. It’s cosy, rather than closed off.

Even to say that “satin chrome door handles are the epitome of Scandinavian design” isn’t very Scandinavian. After all, according to “Janteloven”, there’s no one epitome of anything, because nothing is special. Nothing should take centre stage.

So what are satin chrome door handles, then? Satin Chrome finish on door handles is achieved by chromium plating on a base metal that is then linished to create a matt or brushed effect. Satin Chrome handles have a slightly darker, warmer tone to Polished Chrome handles. The linished, brushed effect of Satin Chrome makes a door handle blend in subtly to calm, relaxed, surroundings.

They are a good way of bringing a touch of Scandinavian design into your home. They’re not a great way and they’re not the only way. There’s also no one kind of satin chrome door handle.

It’s lagom, it follows janteloven, and (with a few pillows and a nice rug) can create a lovely hygge. That’s why satin chrome door handles are good for Scandinavian design.

The humble mortice door knob is a more recent invention than you might think. Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and Charles Dickens: none of those people would have ever seen a door knob, as all of them died before its invention in 1878.

In short, we’ve not had door knobs or mortice door knobs for all that long and yet, what with their almost universal adoption, it feels like they’ve been around longer. However, lovers of the mortice door knob may be mortified to discover that their door opening device of choice was banned in Vancouver in 2014.

Though a ban on door knobs sounds like something out of a cartoon, the reasoning seems sound enough. People with physical disabilities and weaknesses can sometimes struggle to open door knobs, and so door handles make buildings much more accessible to people. That being said there are gripping devices that can make door knobs easier to turn if changing your door knobs isn’t feasible.

Yet the fight between Vancouver’s door-opening public over door knobs and door handles gets even stranger when you look at the pro-door knob’s very logical — albeit very weird — response: bears. Bears are a genuine public health risk in large parts of Canada. Just as door handles will make it easier for people to open doors, they may also make it easier for bears to open doors.

There are (obviously) no statistics or surveys about just how much easier it is for a bear to open a door handle than a door knob. However, one Canadian journalist cited a scene from Jurassic Park as evidence of their argument. They claimed that if the velociraptors from the film could open door handles, then so could bears. No, seriously. Someone actually wrote that.

In response to this, it’s worth pointing out that both Bilbo Baggins’ door from The Hobbit and Boo’s door from Monsters Inc. used door knobs. The former door was opened by a whole host of dwarves who burst in uninvited and the latter door was accessible by monsters. If films are anything to go by, both door handles and door knobs have their flaws when it comes to bear-proofing, dinosaur-proofing, dwarf-proofing, and monster-proofing. Of course, that’s what sash locks are for.

Door Handles, every home has one, here's the not so ultimate guide to door handles - Door Handles for Dummies.

Excuse the pun but handles are extremely handy, in fact this is where they get their name from probably from the Viking Old Norse word hondle meaning to seize.

There are many types of handles out there, fork handles, broom handles etc! but we are only talking about the type we normally see fitted to a door inside a house, hence the term Door Handle.

So what are the different types of door handles?

Without going into too much details (remember this is for dummies) your first decision is going to be the choice between a handle on a backplate or a handle on a rose, this decision will be one only you can make, based on personal choice and of course the style of your home and design of your doors.

Handle on a backplate

This more traditional type of handle has a sprung lever/handle on a rectangular backplate which is screwed to the face of the door, they are supplied in opposite pairs for both sides of the door. This type of handle comes in several variants including the latchset, lockset or bathroom set for use on different doors around the home.

This is a more contemporary type of door handle which has a sprung lever/handle on a round or square fixing rose which is bolted through the door to the rose on the opposite side of the door. This type of handle has various matching accessories such as bathroom thumb turns and keyhole escutcheons for use on different doors around the home.

Both handles do the same job, basically allowing you to push down a handle (or as our American friends like to call it the lever) in order to operate or retract the latch allowing you to open the door.

Latch door handle on backplate

This is your basic door handle on a backplate generally used on doors that you don't need to lock such as the living room or dining room. It consists of a handle/lever on a backplate which when pushed down turns the spindle which passes through the door and the tubular latch inside the door allowing the door to be opened.

Lock door handle on backplate

This door handle is exactly the same as a latch handle as above but it has a keyhole cut out of the backplate below the handle/lever to allow a key to be entered into the door to operate a sash lock inside the door. This handle is commonly used on a back door or a patio door or perhaps an office door.

Bathroom door handle on backplate

The bathroom door handle has a thumb turn sometimes referred to as a turn and release or a snib and release below the handle, this is attached to a 5mm spindle which passes through the door and a bathroom lock inside the door allowing the door to be locked and unlocked. As the name suggests this handle is commonly used on bathrooms and toilets.

The door handle on rose has an outer ring on the rose which is unscrewed or pulled off to reveal several fixing holes, bolt through fixing are supplied which pass through holes in the body of the tubular latch which when tightened pull the handle rose securely against the door. For added strength and security the splined spindle which passes through the latch and into the shaft of each handle is secured from underneath with a grub screw.

As you can see in the image above the same pair of door handles on rose can be fitted with a sash lock (sold separately) and a pair of matching keyhole escutcheons (also sold separately). The sash lock has an 8mm square hole at the top to accommodate the spindle for the handle which works the latch and a key hole below to take the key which works the lock.

Finally the same pair of door handles on rose can be fitted with a bathroom lock (sold separately) and a matching thumb turn (also sold separately). The bathroom lock has an 8mm square hole at the top to accommodate the spindle for the handle which works the latch and a 5mm square hole below to accommodate the spindle for the thumb turn which works the lock.

All door handles come in a variety of different finishes to suit personal tastes and the style of your home, examples of finishes include, polished chrome (shiny), satin chrome (matt), polished brass (shiny, normally laquered to stop tarnishing), black antique, pewter and bronze to name a few.

Fitting new doors? or replacing existing handles?

When buying door handles it is important to understand that the latch or lock that goes inside the door is normally sold separately. The only exception to this is if you are buying door handle packs which are normally supplied with the corresponding latch or lock and hinges.

There are many reasons to replace your old door handles, maybe you just moved in and don't like the existing ones, or perhap your old door hardware is looking a bit scruffy and worn out with the handle drooping down with a broken spring!

If you are fitting new door handles to existing doors with locks or latches already fitted you may consider using the existing ones, this is normally okay unless they are old imperial sized locks and latches or they are worn out from use.

If this is the case or you have new doors then you will need to fit new locks and latches into the doors to make the handles work. Don’t worry as this is not as difficult as you think (especially if you hire a carpenter!)

On a strict budget or feeling extravagant! Do you get what you pay for?

Well yes and no, you can buy a pair of door handles for under £10 or you could splash out £100 for a pair of top branded Italian designer handles (or probably twice that amount if you just walked into a hardware shop in Battersea!).

Both of them will open and close your door, both will look nice, maybe one will look a bit flashier than the other or have a more intricate design, but once your handle is fitted to the door you cannot feel its weight and in my opinion door handles selling around the £10 to £20 mark offer the best value for money

Does red insight passion? Does yellow make people insecure? Does blue create calm? Maybe, but also maybe not. People are torn on how much of an effect colour really does have on our moods, but that hasn’t stopped psychologists from trying to find out.

Do Your Front Door Handles’ Colour Really Affect The Way People Think?

Yes, but it’s not as simple as you might think.

Isolated studies performed all over the world show that colour definitely does have at least some effect on people. However, predicting that effect is a lot more difficult than you might expect. For example, a 2014 study published in the journal Nature argued that — in their experiment — red helped to extend people’s perception of time. Weirdly, according to the study, this is only true of men.

However, other analyses of red’s effect on people say different things. An article on Web MD argues that red increases blood flow, makes you talk more and makes you hungrier. A lot of our reaction to colour might not really be down to deep-rooted psychology, but to cultural trends. In American film, for example, red often means violence and passion. Whereas, in China, red is tied to the idea of national pride and monetary wealth.

There’s also the idea that our perceptions of colour depend largely on personal experience. This, too, makes a lot of sense when you think about it. If your favourite sister once had a red-brown door handle, a red chair, and a red carpet in her room, you might get a warm sense of family and happiness when you see the colour red.

Yet marketers and logo makers disagree. After all, businesses all over the world spend millions trying to create the right logo with just the right colour, and it clearly works. Would Coca-Cola taste anywhere near as exciting or bold without its famous red colour? The Logo Company doesn’t think so, which is why it created an infographic detailing how they think colours make people feel based on the logos which use them.

There’s some logic to their argument. Green makes people think of nature, which makes a lot of sense because green is the colour of vegetation the world over, while black, white, and grey are seen as calm and balanced. This also makes sense and would explain the feeling of calmness, precision, and professionality of Apple stores.

Though there’s also the issue of colour perception. The worldwide colour of the dress fiasco taught us anything, it’s that sometimes we can’t even decide on what colour something is. This isn’t because that particular dress was somehow special. Rather, it’s because not all people perceive colour in the same way.

Colours do make people feel something. Yet they can make different people feel different things and the feelings they do have can often be vague, mild, or abstract. Even still, that doesn’t mean that people won’t have some opinions about you based on your front door.

So what does your front door colour say about you?

Pink Door With Pink Front Door Handles?

For years, pink has been associated with femininity, sweetness and innocence. However, while that’s certainly the effect this colour has on people today, it wasn’t always that way. In the 1920s, pink was associated with the working classes and health. So a pink door with pink door handles might tell people some people that you’re sweet and innocent, but it might tell others that you’re healthy and down to earth.

As mentioned earlier, red can mean different things to different people. In Western culture, it often implies passion, excitement and maybe even violence. According to The Logo Company, orange is a friendly colour. WebMD somewhat agrees, saying that orange is warm and happy colour. Then there’s American film, where orange generally expresses sociability, youth and — once again — warmth. So it seems there’s a pretty clear consensus on orange.

Except Forbes, which argues that orange makes people think of cheap products. So an orange door could make people think you’re warm and friendly, or it could make them think that you’re cheap. To simplify dramatically, the basic idea of Feng Shui is that in order to feel ordered, you must make sure that your environment is ordered too.

Jump forward a few thousand years, and it turns out that there is a lot of science to back up the notion of Feng Shui. Our environment does have a huge effect on our mood. What is more, the layout of our bedrooms can have a huge effect on the amount of sleep we have — or fail to have.

According to the NHS, about one in three people in the UK suffer from some form of insomnia at some point in their lives. Many experts argue that, far too often, we see our bedroom as an extension of our living room — with all the clutter and technology which that brings with it. According to them, this isn’t the right attitude to have. Our bedrooms should be a place to sleep and to spend time with our loved ones, not our computers.

If all of this is starting to sound a lot like Feng Shui to you, then perhaps those ancient Chinese philosophers had a point.

Around the world, there are many bizarre and brilliant door handle designs, so here’s our pick of the best, with five eye-catching (even eye-raising) external or internal door handles.

1. The Bendo Internal Door Handles at the Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa isn’t exactly famed for its subtlety. Being the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa attracts a lot of attention to itself due to more than its mammoth size. The building is luxurious in every possible respect — and nowhere is this more true than in its Armani hotel rooms.

With prices starting at £260 a night for a weekend break in June, it’s not exactly cheap. However, you wouldn’t expect it to be. Not when every aspect of the room has been designed by critically acclaimed architects and artists — and yes, this includes the door handle.

Now, this may seem like a harsh subject but my business partner Paul attended many forced door Burglaries and also had to force open a few doors himself during his 17 years police service. With this in mind, I feel that it is important for you to understand the science behind forcing doors open before we can fully appreciate the importance of home security.

While it’s not as widely studied as medicine or physics, the science of smashing open a locked door with a swift kick is an important one to certain careers. As an agent in the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) in the US for well over two decades, Mike McDaniel was trained in the science of kicking down doors at the FBI academy in Quantico.

Today, the FBI academy doesn’t place as much emphasis on kicking doors open, opting for battering rams instead. However, battering rams don’t always work (as this team of police from Turkey learned the hard way) and McDaniel insists that a swift, front-facing kick is still the best way to open certain kinds of door. So what advice does he have? And what’s the science behind it?

The Sound of a Broken Sash Lock

Listening is a big part of kicking open a door. McDaniel claims that reinforced doors make a dull thud and, if you hear this, it’s time to get the battering ram. What you’re listening for is the sound of the sash lock cracking straight through the door frame. When a frame is made of flimsy wood, or when the lock isn’t securely installed, kicking down this kind of door is easy enough. When it’s not, then it’s best to save your energy.

Physics can explain why you hear a thud when a door is reinforced and a louder crack when a door is about to break open. Sound waves are caused by displacement of molecules. The more that molecules are displaced, the louder the sound. With a reinforced door, your kick isn’t going to displace many molecules, so all you get is a dull thud for your efforts. Meanwhile, the molecules in a door with a wooden frame can be hugely displaced by the same kick. As a result, you get a satisfyingly loud crack as the door crashes open.

To avoid this, we’d recommend strong sash locks and door bolts. However, there are techniques for kicking down bolted doors, too.

Bolts Vs. Boots: Can You Kick Open a Bolted Door?

It depends. The idea of a bolt is to make a door more secure than a lock would by being longer, thicker and stronger than locks are. The deeper the bolt is allowed to be, the stronger the door. This kind of reinforcement is also a common principle in bridge and building engineering. It’s helped to save countless engineering projects from disaster after years of learning the hard way.

The best way to kick open a door with a bolt is to kick right above where the bolt and the sash lock are. Once again, though, if you don’t start to hear that cracking sound, then you’re probably out of luck. If the bolts are spread out (one near the top, one near the bottom, with a lock in the middle) this even distribution of force will make the door even harder to kick open.

Speaking of even distribution of force…

The Science of Weight Distribution

When kicking open a door, McDaniel recommends making sure that your foot strikes the door completely flat. The reason for this is weight distribution. If you were to kick with the force needed to break open a door and strike the door heel first, you’d end up directing all that force onto a small section of your foot. This means you’d likely end up breaking it — your foot, not the door. By spreading the force out with a flat foot, you are protecting your body.

The physics of weight distribution is part of what makes doors easier to kick down. However, this same principle can be also applied to lessening the impact of your weight so that you can walk on eggs without breaking them.

Safety Considerations

Finally, it’s worth bearing certain safety considerations in mind. McDaniel says that the temptation can be to try bashing the door open with your shoulder. In terms of weight distribution, this actually makes more sense than using your foot. However, he recommends against this. Your shoulder is a softer, less powerful part of your body than your foot. As a result, trying to break open a door in this way can cause many injuries.

Finally, McDaniel recommends covering your legs with jeans or trousers (as opposed to shorts) to save yourself from splinters. And don’t forget to stretch as well!

Metal is a great way to give your home a sleek, modern feel. However, there is the worry that that’s the only thing it does and that too much of it can make your home feel like a warehouse or steel works. That’s the old way of looking at it. According to Lucy Denyer from the Telegraph, metal is “creeping into our homes in all guises and in all places, from wallpaper to flooring, appliances to furniture.”

The modern home can contain metal in far more places than originally thought possible. Yet, there is still the possibility of making your living room look too much like a laboratory if metal is used incorrectly. Instead, it’s important to complement your colour or pattern scheme with everything in the room.

This is especially important when adding metal to a room. Brass, chrome, stainless steel and wrought iron are all wildly different types of metal and all of them give a room a different aura. Mixing them up looks confusing and messy, so stick with one and use it throughout the room.

…But Don’t Be Afraid to Mix It Up

While gold, silver, brass, and antique black metal in one room is a definite no, different silver-coloured finishes can complement each other well. Some polished silver table ornaments would work nicely with a polished chrome interior door handle. However, those same decorations would work equally well with other types of silver-coloured metal with other types of finish, such as a satin chrome interior door handle.

This same rule is true for gold-coloured metal, brass-coloured metal, darker-coloured metal, and interior design in general. It works much better on door knobs than on door handles (as you have to twist to open a door knob) and it works especially well on one of our mushroom mortice door knobs with a polished brass or polished chrome finish. The perfectly round shape of the mushroom mortice knob will make it harder to grasp than other door knobs if you’ve covered it in lotion. What’s more, the polished brass or polished chrome finish will make it extra slippery. Just make sure you clean all of the lotion off of the Door Handle afterwards to avoid damage to any lacquer that may have been applied!

The Birth of The Padlock

The word padlock entered the English language sometime before 1000 AD, when livestock was held within a paddock (an enclosed area) using a lock not dissimilar from the padlock we use today. The word pad was taken from “paddock” and combined with the work “lock” to create “padlock”.

However, though padlocks have been found in excavated Viking settlements dating back centuries, travel some miles east of the UK and you will find that the use of padlocks began over a millennia before it entered our language — well before the Biblical birth of Christ.

As with everything this far back in time, neither the date nor location is entirely agreed upon. Some sources claim that 500 BC is an accurate date, but seeing as humans were forging copper and other metals long before this, particularly in parts of Asia, we cannot truly know at which date the padlock began to be used. Locks were being made for many years before the padlock, with different materials and designs. Some sources suggest the ancient Egyptians and Chinese contributed to the invention of the padlock centuries before 500 BC. Simple locks can be traced back to before 2000 BC in Egypt and Babylon.

It is safe to say that sometime before 500 BC padlocks began to resemble something similar in shape and size to the padlock we use today. By 500 BC, the padlock was being used by various civilisations around the world. That’s over 2500 years ago!

The Padlock as a Continental Treasure

As different civilisations began progressing their ability to create locks, different padlocks and ways of making them were passed around. Sooner or later merchants travelling Asian trading routes all began using the padlock. In the first 100 years AD, many parts of Asia — including China — had key-operated locks and sometimes even combination locks that, though not as sturdy or reliable, worked in more or less the same way as the padlock we know today. Padlocks were such a unique and practical creation that they were used by royalty and nobility and sometimes even given as gifts in decorative designs or with engraved messages.

The Dark Ages Through to Today's Padlock

Unfortunately, after 300 AD the trading routes between Rome and China were disrupted and Europe became an isolated continent which then headed into the Dark Ages followed by the Middle Ages.

It was here that a variety of padlocks emerged all across Europe as different people experimented with different designs. This would continue up until the 19th century when Scandinavian style locks used the rotating disc design that is now frequently used today. (The inner discs lineup with use of a key to release the shackle.) Different shapes and sizes were experimented with and different ways of maintaining security. From long shackle locks to combination locks, the variety of padlock would then expand for years to come.

This poor door really took a beating in Monsters, Inc. The paint job needs touching up after going through the shredder and we’re not entirely sure how the door knob managed to survive the ordeal. Just to be safe, we’d recommend replacing it with a top-quality mortice door knob.

Poor Hodor could have survived if his door had been properly locked. We’re not saying that our Bala door knob set would have prevented the White Walkers from getting in, but they may have helped.

Platform 9 ¾from Harry Potter

OK, so this isn’t technically a door, but a door handle built into the wall of Platform 9 ¾ could help confused Hogwarts freshers find their way. It’s hard enough starting a new school, let alone when you can’t find the magical portal to get there. We’d go for a stainless steel door handle to catch the eyes of lost students.

A tubular latch is the part that keeps the door which closes when you pull the handle or turn the mortice knob. Without it, the door would simply not stay closed. The tubular latch is often referred to as a mortice latch or tubular mortice latch.Mortice means that is fitted into a hole or recess in the wooden door.

So why are there so many different types of latches on our e-Hardware website?

Standard Tubular Latch

Each latch we sell has a particular function and use. Our standard tubular latch is — as the name suggests — the latch that is most commonly fitted in the UK. This makes it ideal to put in our door packs as the chances are this is what you will need to replace your existing unit.

Architectural Tubular Latch

Our architectural range of latches is the next step up in quality and design. If you are hanging new doors, this is something I would strongly recommend you always fit as they are by far a more superior product. They come with two springs in the tube, one is a soft touch spring which allows the door to close without the need to push the handle down and the second is a much stronger spring which gives a very firm action to the handle. They also come with a black box, sometimes called a splinter guard, that goes behind the striker plate and hides the timber in the frame. This gives the latch a more architecturally tidy finish.

Smart Latch

We also stock the smart latch, which is an incredibly ingenious way to quickly fit a latch without the need to use a chisel. I love this latch as it speeds up the time to fit and looks fantastic. It matches incredibly well with our modern range of round, rose door handles. For more detailed information about it, check out my previous blog post on the smart latch.

Adjustable Latch

The last range — but probably the most satisfying — range of latches we sell are our adjustable latches. I say “satisfying” because the number of customers that we have helped with this product is incredible.

In the 1970s to mid-90s, a company called Weiser supplied hundreds of thousands of latches to house builders all around the country. It was a unique product which was easy to fit as all the builder had to do was drill a 50mm hole through the door and fit the knob into the supplied latch. Unfortunately, Weiser latches are no longer in production and, until now, people have not been able to buy replacement knobs or latches. This has meant having to replace entire doors or sticking with the old knobs.

Thanks to our adjustable latches, you can now have a selection of modern handles and knobs without the worry of having to call a carpenter in to hang new doors — saving hundreds of pounds!

Bolt Through Fixing Holes

All our tubular latches have bolt through fixing holes either side of the follower (that’s the square hole in the latch that the spindle/rod passes through). These bolt through fixing holes are required when fitting door handle levers on rose as they are pulled tight against the door with fixing bolts that pass right through the door. Be careful when buying some very cheap tubular latches as they may not have these holes.

Backset

The “backset” is the measurement between the forend plate and the centre of the keyhole or follower (the square hole that the spindle goes through).

Remember that the size of the latch or lock will determine where your door handle or door knob will end up on your door. If you have a panelled door and you want your door furniture to sit nicely in the centre of the stile, or if you have deep frame stops, you need to choose the correct size lock or latch with the correct backset to accommodate this.

Cleaning your Windows and Window Furniture

Regular cleaning can help to prevent damage to your windows and window furniture. A quick wipe with a damp cloth will get rid of most of the dust and dirt on your vinyl window frames. For a more thorough clean, make up a simple cleaning solution with warm water and washing up liquid. If you have wooden frames, stick to a slightly damp cloth to avoid damaging the wood.

When cleaning your window furniture, a damp cloth should do the job. Polished chrome window catches may show up fingerprints, so a dry wipe is usually enough.

Cleaning the window pane requires a little more thought. If you don’t have any glass cleaning spray to hand, you can make up a solution yourself. Mix equal parts water and vinegar and use a spray bottle to evenly cover the window. Use a cloth to disperse the liquid, then buff with a microfiber cloth to remove any streaks. If the smell of vinegar is a little strong, be sure to open the window!

Sealing your Windows

Poorly sealed windows can negatively affect your home’s insulation. Drafts and leaks can enter through broken or missing seals, so it’s best to address this problem immediately. You can get a professional to do this, but doing it yourself is always more satisfying.

Replace any worn rubber seals right away. For a more thorough job, consider inserting canned spray foam beneath the window trim. This will prevent water and air coming through, making your home warmer and drier throughout the winter.

Re-painting your Frames

A fresh layer of paint can transform your windows and make your window furniture stand out even more. If your windows are a few years old, they might just need a touch-up. If you fancy a bigger change, you could opt for a new colour entirely.

To get started, remove any window furniture and put it in a safe place. Be careful not to lose your shiny new window catches! Use masking tape to cover any nearby areas that you are not painting, and put a sheet on the floor to avoid drips. The painting process is different for vinyl and wooden window frames, but in both cases you’ll need to clean the area before painting it. Be careful not to paint over moving parts, because this can cause the window to become seized.

Fixing Squeaky Window Furniture

Squeaky window catches and other window furniture can be annoying. Thankfully, the solution is probably lying in a drawer or cupboard in your home. A quick squirt of water-dispensing lubricant (such as WD-40) and wiping away any excess liquid should solve the problem. Open and close your window catches to let the liquid work its way in.

If you don’t have a ready-made solution, a team from Philadelphia’s Drexel University found that a combination of 90% vegetable oil and 10% acetone works just as well as WD40. Acetone is commonly used as a nail polish remover, so there’s a chance you’ve already got some lying around.

Inspecting your Windows and Window Furniture for Damage

Regularly inspecting for damage and wear makes it easier to address problems with your windows and window furniture. A quick check every couple of weeks, as well as a clean, will ensure you keep on top of your window maintenance.

Getting into a maintenance routine is essential for prolonging your windows and window furniture. As well as aesthetic improvements, a few minutes of attention every month can improve the functionality of your window furniture.

This time up, it’s windows. We’ve discussed doors and door furniture over the last few posts, so I thought I would touch on windows and how to make the most out of them with window furniture. Before we assess the windows themselves, it's important to consider whether you are getting the most out of what they have to offer. Is the layout of your room taking advantage of the natural light available? Is there anything blocking natural light from your windows?

Natural light has a positive impact on your health, improving happiness and productivity. It is essential that your windows are being used to their full potential. Nowadays, people plan their living rooms over where the television is best located. This seems absolutely bizarre, don’t you think?

Remove anything that may be blocking light from the windows. Move your room around if you need to and remove any clutter on your window sills to let them stand proudly as a central part of your room. I thought this time around I would fill you all in on some of our favourite door and handle combinations here at E-Hardware. We covered a bit of door history in my blog post Doors and Door Handles Through Time: From Old To New recently. I discussed the beauty of different doors and door hardware from the Georgian period through to the Edwardian period, and it got me thinking about writing a post on our favourite door and door hardware combinations!

Remember that door handles, knockers and all door hardware are always as important as the door itself. These are like the jewels in the crown; they can stand out beautifully and make your door glint. Without them, the crown is plain, but with them it is magnificent.

There is a great variety or doors and door hardware out there, in all different shapes, sizes, colours and materials, so what goes with what? Your front door is key to creating the best first impression of your house and it’s important that you’re both happy and proud with your front door and it’s appearence. So here are a few of our favourite combinations that won’t ever let you down...

Chrome or Satin Door Hardware on a Pitch Black Door

I like to think that it’s not just it’s the residents that make Number 10, Downing Street such a world famous door — although it does help! There is an undeniable, majestic appearance in the combination of black door and shiney door hardware. It is a quietly confident door that radiates stability. A black painted door is minimalistic but strong. It takes a back seat and lets any shiney metallic door hardware do the talking. Satin or Chrome door hardware stands out, giving it a striking, classical look. With well cared for door furniture like this is guaranteed to impress. Keep it well maintained so that it lets your front door gleam against the black.

Black Antique Door Hardware against Bright Colours

A black door too bland for you? Another favourite of ours is black antique hardware on brightly coloured doors. Bright doors really took off in the Edwardian period and there are some beautiful examples in cities all over the United Kingdom. Whether it is yellow, red, or another powerful colour, the contrast between the cheerful bright door and the dark door furniture compliment each other wonderfully.

The black antique door hardware helps control the liveliness of the door and looks especially good against a bright shade of yellow, as seen above. This sort of door hardware also doesn’t need any maintenance, as with brass, and will forever look sturdy and stable.

Bronze Door Hardware and Pastel Shades

A door coated in a pastel colour that highlights the door’s wooden grain is an effect I have always admired and, if done correctly, nothing is more unique and majestic than elaborate bronze hardware against pastel coloured doors. Pastel blues or the pastel shades of green and red, as seen in the images above, look wonderful behind antique bronze door hardware.

Bronze hardware is a wonderful fusion of the bronze and black hardware seen in the latter two. It adds a nice amount of colour but isn’t too shiny, nor too dark. It is a bold, modest shade that looks classy and confident.

Pewter Door Hardware and Varnished Wood

Varnished wood and pewter door furniture is a timeless combination that I absolutely love. The highlighted grain of the varnished wood injects character and authenticity and, alongside dark grey pewter door hardware, the colours combine fantastically. A Pewter Turnberry Door Handle, for example, injects a particularly antique, medieval look into your door. It can be used for the front door or internal doors to equal effect. It is a combination that gives your home an authentic feel.

Coat Hooks

A short plank of wood — perhaps from an old pallet — and a set of door knobs can come together as a bespoke coat hook. Apply a lick of paint that matches your home decor, screw in the door knobs, and you’re done! For a really rustic feel, use sandpaper to rough up the paint before attaching the door knobs.

Window Catch Toolbox

For a more ambitious project, consider knocking together a sturdy wooden toolbox. All you need is some wood from an old pallet, a couple of hinges and a window latch. There are plenty of blueprints available online, so search around for the one which suits your needs. The toolbox in the picture below was improvised, but does the job perfectly!

Curtain Holder

The traditional curtain holder is an uninspiring object. Often an afterthought, many of us resort to using a simple metal hook to keep our curtains back. An easy upgrade comes in the form of — yes, you guessed it — the door knob. A decorative door knob can add a stylish touch to your bedroom or lounge, and it won’t break the bank. Alternatively, you could try an interior door handle for even greater holding power.

I was talking to somebody recently about the many different types of doors and all the names they come with. Nowadays when choosing a door or door hardware you’ll likely hear a few eras thrown into the mix, namely Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian. But what does that mean? Is it just a name? Is there meaning behind it or is it a marketing ploy to make it all sound a bit ‘fancier’?  

I thought I would give a brief introduction on doors and how their handles have changed over the last few centuries so you can understand what it actually means to have, say, a Georgian door. I touched on the history of Architectural Ironmongery in my post Hardware Histories: The History and Evolution of Knobs, Handles and Doors but I shall here break down the doors and door handles of different era’s to clean up what is a bit of a grey area!

Doors & Door Handles From The Georgian Era

Let’s go back to the early 1700’s. Doors, of course, have been used throughout time, but the most popular are from this period onwards. The Georgian era is named after a series of four kings who were all named George (surprisingly!) - from the first George who took the throne in 1714 and kicked off the Georgian era to 1837 with the death of King George IV.

Doors from this period are particularly admired today but they were in fact part of a period, architecturally speaking, that was at it’s time considered slightly dull. The art of town planning restricted any expression or individuality. Homes were mainly terraced townhouses with flat fronts, doors located to the left side of the house and long narrow windows to let light into each floor.

It was very common for front doors to have fan lights above them and let light flood the hallway. Brass was the most common material for door hardware with polished brass being attended by maids and servants on a frequent basis. It was likely that a Georgian Mortice Knob or something similar would be located in the centre of the door whilst Brass Backplated door handles as seen below right would be the most common interior door handle choice.

One of my favourite door facts comes from this period! Due to town planning and the strict architectural guidelines of the Georgian period, residents attempted to break away from the uniformed, symmetrical and identical  housing architecture. They attempted to express their own individuality by painting their doors in bright colours and adding their own elegant door hardware. As can now be exhibited in the famous brightly coloured Georgian doors in places like Dublin and Edinburgh!

Georgian doors can most easily be identified through a central placed handle, a lack of glass and frequently topped with fan lights. It was this fan light that let light in so the doors would have been entirely wood.

Doors and Door Hardware From The Victorian Era

With the death of George IV in 1837 came the Victorian era and Queen Victoria's remarkable sixty-three year reign until her death in 1901. This period took a big shift architecture-wise. The flat-fronted terraced buildings of the Georgian period, with their tall windows and uniformed look gave way to houses more elaborately decorated, with bay windows and overhangs.

Frontages on the whole became more decorative and complex with more expression in their architecture but doors themselves became thinner as the shape and width of houses changed. Victorian doors led into narrower hallways to accommodate fewer but larger rooms and they rarely had the same semi circled fan lights above. Commonly, doors had four panels, occasionally with two smaller panels above.

Bright colours and individual door hardware calmed down and simple bronze, brass and silver door handles were used. Glass within the door became a popular feature during the Victorian period as a Gothic revival brought more polychromy. Victorian doors can be identified for their symmetrical stain glass panels as seen above.

Edwardian Doors and Door Hardware

Next up came Kind Edward. The shortest era of the three began after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 and ended under ten years later in 1910. Consequently, there is not a transition as significant as can be noticed between the Georgian and Victorian eras and sometimes Edwardian doors and door hardware are mixed in with the latter.

But that’s not to say there isn’t anything different! In these 10 years the Gothic revival did not halter and obsession with stained glass continued, Edwardian doors became wider with windows often flanking the door, often in the same stained glass.

By this time less and less residents had maids and servants to polish their brass door hardware and look after their steps. Rather than maintaining these themselves people invested in black coated door hardware and furniture as it didn’t need any maintenance.

One of the most talked-about DIY trends we observe concerns staircases. Whether you decide to paint your stairs, paint your spindles or use a striped carpet for your stairs, there are endless ways to turn a simple stairway into an eye-catching feature.

5. Fix Your Squeaky Door Hinges

While squeaky hinges are ideal for alerting you of unwanted visitors, they are usually just annoying and irritating. Luckily, however, they are also easily taken care of. Simply spray some WD-40 or domestic oil onto the door hinges and ensure that they are lubricated properly.

6. Upgrade Your Wall

Upgrading your walls are the perfect way to add a modern and trendy touch to your rooms, but not everyone is a fan of the look of (or the effort that goes into) painted walls. For all those, wall decals are the solution, as these giant wall stickers are the ideal tool to add a little magic to your otherwise plain walls.

7. Clean Your Stained Tub

No matter how often and diligently you clean your bathtub, you can’t avoid stains on it. A great way to get rid of those stains is by using a paste made out of cream of tartar, baking soda and lemon juice to rub into the stain with a soft cloth. Let this sit for around an hour, then rinse it with water.

8. Install a New Faucet

A new faucet is sometimes all you need to transform your regular bathroom and give it a luxurious look. However, it is important to remember that your new faucet should match the style of your existing sink and the design of your bathroom.

9. Fix Your Peeling Wallpaper

Peeling Wallpaper is easily fixed by using a small knife to apply wallpaper paste onto the underside of the peeling section. Afterwards, press the wallpaper against the wall and remove any bubbles with a clean, soft cloth.

10. Stop Your Door from Slamming

Slamming doors are a regular feature in everyone’s home - especially when there are kids around. A quick and easy way to quieten those doors of yours is to use some stick-on felt pads that help protect your door’s surfaces.

One particular thing we at e-Hardware get asked about frequently are door handles and how to best take care of them. Maintaining this area of your home can benefit the first impressions and tactile quality of your home no end, so here are some key hardware maintenance tips for your door handles and door knobs.

Brass-based Door Furniture

Whether we are talking about door handles or door knobs, brass-based products usually come with a hard, acrylic-lacquered surface that prevents the brass underneath from tarnishing. Despite the hard-wearing finish of the lacquer, the coating will eventually begin to crack and splinter at some point. be it due to high moisture or general wear and tear.

The best way to preserve the lacquer, therefore, is to clean it with a soft cloth, using a silicone cleaner (we have found that Mr Sheen carries excellent cleaning products). They are a great tool to prevent moisture getting in and tarnishing the brass underneath. If the lacquer has already started splintering, you will have to entirely remove it and paint the brass with a new coat of protective lacquer.

Stainless Steel

Despite what you might think, not all stainless steel is corrosion proof. It is only marine-quality stainless that is truly resistant to corrosion. So when it comes to your regular stainless steel hardware items, it is important that you clean them on a monthly basis with a silicone spray polish, using a soft cloth.

Polished Chrome / Satin Chrome / Antique brass

Internal door hardware products with a polished chrome, satin chrome, antique brass or most electroplated surfaces should be wiped every two or three months with a soft cloth. If they are used externally, as with the brass based door furniture they should be cleaned with a silicone cleaner like Mr Sheen every other week in order to prevent atmospheric conditions affecting the chrome or brass.

Black Antique

For black antique door handles, use silicone spray polish, which should be applied to your hardware on a regular basis with a cloth. Particular attention should be paid to the screws attached to the door handle, as screws in external and high-moisture areas tend to corrode  and rust rather quickly. You can counteract this by brushing the screw head with some black Hammerite.  

Door Hinges

While we have focused on door handles so far, other door hardware items such as door hinges also need regular care and protection. Usually, a quick wipe with some silicone spray and a cloth, along with a light oiling between the joints, will suffice.

If your hinges, however, have a bearing surface, they will need some extra attention. The hinges themselves need to be wiped with an oily cloth on a regular basis, and the bearings should be lubricated once a year, using a 3-IN-ONE oil.

Sash Locks, Dead Locks and Rim Locks

When you are dealing with either sash locks, dead locks or rim locks, take care to treat the internal mechanism with oil every six months. Do not, however, oil cylinder type locks, such as yale and euro profile locks, as this will result in the pins jamming and the keep the lock from rotating.

Why exactly, though, are DIY jobs this popular? Why do people prefer to swing the hammer themselves rather than hire a professional contractor? After all, if you get a professional in, you don’t have to worry about anything and ‘waste’ any of your time. All you need to do is tell the contractor what you want and everything is taken care of. So why take the DIY route? What are the benefits? Being a DIY Man myself i can certainly think of a few;

Save Plenty of Money

The majority of people choose to do the menial home improvement jobs themselves simply because it saves them money. When I was younger and had just purchased my first home, this was the main reason I started DIYing. When you’re in the middle of a home renovation (or even if you’re not) you are constantly looking for ways and means to save money whenever and wherever you can. While a good place to start is opting for more affordable hardware and furniture such as cheap door handles, DIY can be another perfect way to save some of your pretty pennies.

So when there is a choice between changing the door locks yourself for free and paying a professional to come in and do it for you, if you’re tightening your budget it is advisable to choose the former, as DIY jobs are, for the most part, the wiser and more economical choice.

Given, of course, that you have researched how to do the job properly. From past experience, I can say that fitting a lock incorrectly or doing most DIY jobs incorrectly will most likely end up costing you more money than you had planned, as fixing a botched DIY job is no easy task. So know your abilities and limitations before you decide to Do It Yourself.

Gain a Sense of Freedom

With DIY jobs, you are the boss. You are in control of how to do it or when to do it. You don’t need to explain anything to anyone, you don’t need to justify any of your choices and decisions, and you won’t ever be bullied into changing your mind. Your job, your decision.

Over the years I have learnt that it is always a good idea to make all the decisions regarding your home renovation in advance, as this will save you a future headache and also avoid any delays further down the line. That said, there is always a realistic chance that half-way through a job, you or your partner might change the door furniture choices and for opt for a different design or finish. With DIY, this poses no problem at all, since you don’t have to explain yourself to anyone and endure angry looks or heavy sighs from your contractor.

Meet New People

A lot of people might not be aware of this, but one of the most rewarding advantages of DIY is how easy it is to meet fascinating and new people when you enter the world of do-it-yourself. Whether you want to change the type of your door lock, whether your door won’t shut properly anymore, or whether you simply fancy a new design for your door handle, installing a new door lock doesn’t have to be a daunting task.

Here are a few tips and tricks to guide you from the removal of your door locks to the installation of the new ones.

Remove Your Old Door Lock

You will need a screwdriver to do this.

Step 1:

Open the door and wedge it open so that you have access to both the narrow edge and both sides of the door.

Step 2:

Undo the Screws that attach the door handles or knobs to the door and remove them fully so that you can see the square hole where the door handles go through.

Step 3:

On the narrow edge of the door, undo the two screws that hold the faceplate of the lock onto the door. (The narrow metal plate of the lock that is shown when the door is open).

Step 4:

On either side of the door, put the screwdriver through the square hole of the lock (which should now be showing if you have removed the door handles or knobs).

Step 5:

Once the screwdriver is through the square hole of the lock, hold it at both ends and pull it towards the edge of the door.

Step 6:

The lock will now come forward. Remove it from by pulling it out from the narrow edge with your fingers.

Step 7:

Measure the lock case and forend and make sure your new lock is the same size - most importantly make sure the hole where the door handle or door knob spindle goes through is the same distance away from the edge of the lock and the old lock.

Install The New Door Lock

Step 1:

Assuming you have brought a lock that is the same size as your old one, begin the installation by putting the new lock into the existing hole in your door. Depending on the new lock, you might find that you have to modify your door by chiselling out any recesses to ensure that your new lock will fit in perfectly as some lock designs change over the years.

Step 2:

Once your lock has been inserted, you will need to screw the forend of the lock to the edge of the door. This will hold the lock in position. Make sure the lock is in the correct position before you tighten the screws.

Step 3:

Once the lock has been secured, you will need to screw the door handles or door knobs back onto the door ensuring you use the bolt through fixings and grub screws. Before tightening all the remaining screws and calling your DIY project a success, make sure to test the performance of your new door lock and handles. And don’t forget to do this with your doors open, as the last thing you want to do is to lock yourself out.

Door Handle Vs. Door Knob

It’s important to remember that it doesn’t necessarily have to be a door handle, and there are a number of reasons to opt for a door knob instead, one of them being that it can instantly give your house a more classic and sophisticated look.

However, while door knobs have their own set of advantages, there are also certain disadvantages to consider. The most important one is accessibility. Before making any decision, consider who uses the door in question. Door knobs, for example, are difficult to operate for elders and children as they require tight grasping.

Function First

Another factor that will determine which kind of door knob or door handle to choose is function. There are certain rooms in your house that require more privacy than others, and therefore each room requires a different kind of door knob or door handle to be compatible with the door lock or latch.

As there are a large variety of door locks you can choose from, there are also a large variety of door handles and door knobs to accompany these locks. These are:

• A Latchset Door Handle / Passage Knobset: This type has no locking function and is used largely for hallway doors. Used in conjunction with a tubular latch.

• A Privacy Set / Privacy Knobset: As the name suggests, this is a type of door handle or door knob that is used for rooms which need a higher level of privacy, such as bedrooms and bathrooms. The “turn button” locks the door handle or door knob and therefore does not lock the door itself and should not be used where a high level of security is needed. They are also used in conjunction with a tubular latch.

• A Bathroom Set Door Handle: Much like the privacy set, this is also used for rooms which need a higher level of privacy such as bedrooms and bathrooms. Unlike the privacy set, however, these are used in conjunction with a bathroom lock and do not require a key, as the door lock is controlled using a “thumb turn” that is on the door handle or door knob.

• A Lockset Door Handle / Entrance Knobset: This option has a keyhole located in the handle or knob on both sides and requires a key for the door to be locked or unlocked. These are generally used for front and back doors or store rooms that require security.

• The Dummy: The last item on the list is the dummy. Usually supplied in singles, it is designed to be used on closets or airing cupboard doors, where generally “roller bolts” are fitted and therefore the door handle or knob act as a “pull lever”.

Create A Budget

Once you know which type of door handle or door knob to go for, set a budget. Know exactly how much and how little you are willing to pay.

Remember that it is not always necessary to spend a fortune on the perfect door handle, as there are a number of places that offer a wide range of cheap door handles that are still high-quality and stylish.

Think About Your Door Furniture’s Design And Material

While the main purpose of a door handle is to be functional, it can also greatly influence the style of your house. As a result, it’s worth spending a minute or two considering which kind of design to opt for.

A chrome or stainless door handle, for instance, will give your house a more modern look, so this might be the right choice for those who prefer a contemporary feel. If, however, you are more of a traditional type, you can’t go wrong with antique, pewter or porcelain door handles or knobs, which will automatically compliment your vintage decor. Those who are undecided and like both designs may want to opt for a bronze finish as it compliments both a traditional and modern decor.

Today, I thought I would talk a bit about ironmongery and the evolution of it over the past centuries.

Ironmongery: What is it?

The term “ironmongery”, or rather “architectural ironmongery”, is generally used to refer to the art of creating items such as locks, door handles, closers, and hinges out of iron. In recent times, ironmongery has been expanded to include hardware goods made out of plastic or metals like steel, aluminium, and brass.

Where is it from?

The use of architectural hardware for houses and other buildings has a long-standing tradition, dating back as far as 1,200 BC. But it wasn’t until the Middle Ages that ironmongery became a highly sought-after skill. Ironmongers and blacksmiths became highly valued members of the society that were paid handsome sums for their ability to create a wide variety of items.

While these days ironmongery is something that is used almost exclusively for the construction of buildings, back then it was also used to create weapons, tools, and domestic appliances.

The concept of architectural ironmongery as something that focused on building-related hardware wasn’t established until houses evolved from single-room, open-space areas to homes with several units. Rooms, for example, were now separated by doors and had their own windows. This change in interior architecture resulted in a rise of iron hardware such as locks, door handles, knobs, and hinges.

In fact, the 19th century experienced a high demand in a wider variety of hardware items and more diverse and unique patterns.

This demand was catered to especially during the industrial revolution as production, or indeed mass production, of these items experienced one of its most significant peaks. Ironmongery became more accessible, affordable and more refined in its quality due to the machine industry.

The same century also saw the rise of ironmongery as something used to decorate homes. While the primary application was still the construction of homes, churches, and other buildings, it was used more and more to adorn the outsides and insides of homes.

The introduction of postal deliveries, for example, saw an increased demand for types of door furniture like letter plates and plaques for house numbers.

Where is it now?

Even these days ironmongery is used predominantly to construct and decorate buildings.

But sadly, traditional ironmongery has seen a decline in the past years as there has been less of a demand for high-end and hand-made items. Artistic and refined iron hardware has been replaced by cheaper and more accessible products that are mass produced.

Luckily there are still a few ironmongers and businesses that put a premium on quality, individuality, and originality. They recognise ironmongery as an art form that needs to be maintained and preserved for future generations.

What Is It and what does it do?
SMARTLATCH is a new innovative latch that is designed to be used instead of the standard tubular latch you and I are both used to seeing. It works in exactly the same way and is designed to keep your doors in the closed position.

Why should I buy this instead of a normal tubular latch?
Due to the Innovative design the latch can be easily fitted meaning you don’t need to hire a carpenter to fit them saving you time and money. Providing you have the right drill bit (25mm) you can fit these in fewer than 5 minutes! 5 minutes! According to the manufacturer Dale, that’s saving you 3/4 of the time a standard latch would. This means more time spent on other jobs or relaxing doing things you love instead of DIY-ing or paying a carpenter to DIY for you.

These latches have also been specifically designed to enhance the aesthetics of your door. They come in a range of finishes to suit the look you want (something that you may not be able to get with standard tubular latches).

Are they more expensive?
You can get a standard tubular latch for £1.85 but depending on your situation you will most likely be paying for a carpenter to fit your door hardware adding to this cost.  These smart latches start from £5.83 and considering they take less time to fit and look brilliant I think they are worth the little bit extra.

Do they really only take 5 minutes to fit?
As you can see from the instructions below a smart latch can be fitted in just 3 steps, not only that, the steps are REALLY easy and the feed back I have had from customers already is positive so I am confident that you will be able to fit them with ease and speed.

 
The smart latch also comes with two types of striker plate depending on whether you need to fit a new one or replace an existing one.

The first striker plate is normally fitted when you have a new door frame or where a striker plate has not been fitted previously. Much like the smart latch itself, it is easy to fit using a 25mm drill bit to drill a hole in the frame of the door and then inserting the striker plate into the frame.

The second strike plate is designed to be fitted as a replacement. For example, you may have had new doors fitted in your home and therefore need a new latch but have existing cut out in the frame where the original striker plate was.

Both of these striker plates are easy to fit alongside the smart latch with instructions included with the product itself.
